DIY Planter Box
So I know it's been quite a while since I have posted but we have been taking a little break from projects lately to (gasp) just enjoy our house for a bit! P.S it totally has nothing to do with trying to save some cash for our next projects or vacations or anything...(lies)...
But we did to a little landscaping in our mud pit, aka the backyard and now have grass! Which by the way, is huge for us! Now Palmer comes inside slightly less dirty which is so helpful with our white floors.
Another landscaping project we worked on was clearing our the "garden" on the side of house to add a vegetable garden in a planter box! It was so easy and it has been so fun to have a nice out door space to love on every day.
What we are growing
3 different types of tomatoes (the ones the smart lady at the farmers market recommended!)
Bell peppers
Jalapeños
Onions
Cilantro
Mint
Spinach
We wanted to make sure we had everything we could to make guacamole fresh from our garden! I even tried to convince Taylor to plant an avocado tree but I am told Indiana isn't great for that. #greenhouse anyone?
How we did it
Building the planter box was probably one of our easiest projects to date (thank goodness)!
To start we had to clear out the two gross pine trees growing right next to our house and stealing all our sun. It really helped inside as much as it did outside because now we get even more light into our home, bonus.
After clearing out the space, pulling and spraying for weeds, we laid down landscape fabric to prevent weeds from growing underneath and into our new garden. This step is so simple but makes all the difference in the upkeep of your garden, so don't skimp!
We bought six 8' cedar planks from Lowe's and had them cut two in half (for free!) to come out with a 8' x 4' planter box. We then bought two cubed posts, cut to size, to attach the planks to on each corner and through the center to keep the box stable and from deforming over time with the weight of the dirt.
We filled this beaut with 15 bags of dirt (crazy right?) and popped in some seedlings...
When we realized how long the seedlings were going to take to actually produce crop, we bought some starts from the farmers market & Lowe's to hold us over while we wait!
Super easy and such a fun way to feel extra nature-y this summer!
